2010-07-26 Junior World Championships - Day 3, 4 & 5 Reports
2010 JUNIOR WORLDS DAY 3
Our last four girls made weight with no problems and seem to be very settled in their preparation.
48 KG Jasmine Slinn vs. JPN 0-1,1-1,1-5 loss
Both wrestlers spent some time feeling each other out. JPN attacked Jasmines lead leg several times but held on to Jasmines arm and she could not get around for the counter. With a short time left JPN finally scored on the attack and we lost 0-1. In the second round it was much the same with JPN attacking and finally scoring to lead by 1. Jasmine then cracked her defence and hit a great single to tie it 1-1 and win the round. In the third round Jasmine got taken down early and turned for 2. JPN was able to establish another couple takedowns to win the round 5-1.
55 Kg Brianne Barry vs. HUN Pin 1:15 win
Not much to say here Brianne manhandled her and threw her with a head and arm and easily ended the match. Brianne was completely confident and self assured out there and it was great to see.
63 Kg Danielle Lappage vs. GRE Pin 1:35 win
No sooner had Brianne won when Danielle repeated the performance. Again she was strong, confident and seemed in complete control of the match. These two wins have given us a very strong start.
72 Kg Veronica Keefe vs. BLR Pin 1:55 loss
BLR took a two on one from the start and Veronica was unable to clear her arm. She became free several times but got caught right up in it again. In the last 20 seconds she stepped back and got caught in a firemans and eventually pinned. BLR seemed very strong and hopefully she will carry her through.
55 Kg Brianne Barry vs. CHN 1-0, 5-0 win
Tough, aggressive and controlling is the best way to describe Brianne as she manhandled CHN. The first round was tactical and in control as Brianne controlled her completely with a two on one and then hit a great double for 1. That was all that was needed to take the first round 1-0. In the next round CHN shot a low single and Brianne sunk in a power nelson and turned her for 2 and 1. She stayed there for the rest of the round picking up 2 more points as she re-ajusted to try for the pin, Brianne takes the round 5-0
63 Kg Danielle Lappage vs. UKR 6-0,7-0 win
2010 JUNIOR WORLDS DAY 4
This is the first cool day that we have had most of the time it has been 34-38 with very poor air conditioning. This has made it difficult to recover during the days of weight cutting.
After a night of celebration after our Gold Medal and 5th place finish for the girls it is the mens chance to perform.
50 Kg Vaughn Gandy vs. KGZ 0-1, 0-1 loss 18th
Vaughn wrestled a very smart and aggressive match , but at 1:56 of the first round when he let KGZ up off a shot and got pushed out of bounds. He tried to score rather relying on the clinch, Vaugh lost the round. In the second round KGZ scored early on a low single and ran the rest of the round as Vaughn continually pushed shoved and slapped to set up attack after attack but came up short 1-0.
60 Kg Scott Schiller vs. GEO 0-2, 0-1 loss 24th
GEO is always a tough draw but Scott came to wrestle. He was fast, tough and aggressive throughout the whole match. In the first round the action was fast and aggressive for both wrestlers Scott side stepped and slipped out of several attacks by GEO and then Scott hit a deep high crotch but GEO was able to counter and come around for one. Scott pressed to win the match but got caught on a low single to end the round 2-0 for GEO In the second round it was repeated attempts by both wrestlers and GEO finally got Scott on a low single again to win 1-0.
This was not your typical push the guy out of bounds for 1 point, it was a hard fought aggressive battle. Our hope is the GEO will pull him through.
74 Kg Connor Malloy vs. ITA 2-1, 1-0 win
A slow start from both wrestlers, action started at 1:45 of the first round. Conner was hit by a strong double and was down one point . He then came back to hit a low single for one and then countered ITA for one more and the win. The second round was more of the same, with Connor scoring on a low single and winning 1-0.
96 Kg Arjun Gill vs. POL 0-3, 0-7 loss 23rd
We were geared for this match and knew it would be a tough one. Arjun wrestled hard.
74 Kg Connor Malloy vs. BUL 1-3, 0-1 loss 12th
BUL scored first on a double and then turned Connor for two more. Connor did manage to get a single leg late in the period but couldnt turn him for the win. In the second round there was little action as BUL scored again on a double and Connor was shut down and lost 1-0.
None of our boys got back in, tomorrow Jake, Shawn, Manjot and Sunny get their turn.
2010 JUNIOR WORLDS DAY 5
Well it is the last day and the guys all made weight with no problems. It has been a lot cooler here the last two days so the arena is much cooler and should lead to better wrestling.
The finals last night were nothing less than fabulous , 60 Kg and 74 Kg Gold and Bronze was the best wrestling I have ever seen. The athleticism of the athletes was unreal. You have to watch it on the FILA website or you tube to believe it.
55 Kg Jake Hergenhein vs. EST 6-5, 5-0 win
Sorry I missed the start of the first round as Shawn was on at the same time. Jake did wrestle very smart and attacked with solid leg shots and turned him with a gut wrench. In the second round jake scored first with a low single and then waited for EST to attack, Jake caught him with an under and over and put him in his back for over a minute to take the win 5-0. Good solid smart wrestling.
60 Kg Shawn Daye-Finley vs. IND 1-1, 0-2 loss 24th
Shawn wrestled aggressively and scored on a low single to lead 1-0 but gave a single back to lose on the tie 1-1. In the second round it was a tough one, The IND came out strong to push the pace, Shawn fought hard but the IND scored on two low singles to take the round and match.
84 Kg Manjot Sandhu vs. KAZ 1-1, 4-1 win
KAZ was an absolute horse and never stopped attacking Manjot. Manjot fought off three hard shots that had us all on the edge of our seats. On the 4th shot KAZ scored and we had only 20 or so seconds left when KAZ shot again and this time Majot got around him and scored to win the round 1-1. In the second round KAZ scored again on a hard double, Like I said this guy is a horse. Manjot fought off a second shot and then re-shot a low single to go 1-1. On the ground Manjot put in a leg ride and put KAZ on his back for the last 50 seconds of the period to win 4-1.
What a great match to watch!
120 Kg Sunny Dhinsa vs. BLR 0-1, 1-3 loss 14th
The match for the most part was just pushing and snapping the head. With 20 or so seconds left in the first round BLR grabbed Sunnys leg and Sunny countered with a whizzer they went out of bounds in that position and BLR got the point 0-1. In the second round there was no score until 1:42 when BLR shot and Sunny scrambled around to get the point and a 1-0 lead. Then Sunny made a mistake, he stood up to snap his head down and BLR blasted him for a double and three points right at the end of the round to win 3-1.
55 Kg Jake Hergenhein vs. FRA 2-0, 4-0 win
Not a difficult match for Jake he arm dragged off of FRA shot and grabbed the single for the takedown, this was repeated 30 seconds later to win the round 2-0. The second round was much the same FRA was no real threat and Jake scored with arm drags to single twice and then got a trapped arm off a leg ride for 2 more and the win 4-0.
84 Kg Manjot Sandhu vs. POL 1-2, 1-3 loss 14th
Manjot scored first on a single leg scramble and lead 1-0. He protected his lead and just as time ran out there was a scramble and Manjot got hipped to his back off a single and he re rolled POL but time ran out and he was not given the points 1-2. In the second round Manjot again score first on a arm drag to a single and lead 1-0. Again with time running out Pol scored on a single and ankle lace turned Manjot for 2 to win 3-1 and it was over. Manjot wrestled well, we were close.
55 Kg Jake Hergenhein vs. AZE 0-6, 1-6 loss
First the score is not as lop sided as it looks. AZE was extremely tall and lanky and seemed to be able to score from any position. Jake just couldnt avoid his reach and he scored off his tie ups. He was just a funky wrestler, Jake was in deep on his shots several times and simply could not score, this guy got out of everything.
55 Kg Jake Hergenhein vs. EGT 6-8, 0-6 loss 9th
Jake started out the first round with two great takedowns using an arm drag to a single leg. He also got 2 more points on a trapped arm tilt before giving up 1 on a takedown. Jake was winning 4-1. EGT came alive and as Jake was trying to finish another arm drag to a single he got countered on his back . After that it was just a flurry of rolls and we ended up losing the round 8-6. In the second round Jake again got in on a good single but got caught and turned several times and it ended 6-0. It wasnt that Jake made any real errors it just that EGT was incredibly slick and funky and never stopped scrambling.
All in all the men won 3 matches and were very close in two others. We had our chances and hopefully we have learned a great deal and will improve next year.
