Greco-Roman Competition Completes Great 2015 Championships

St. Catharines – The Greco-Roman portion of the 2015 ASICS Junior / Senior Canadian Wrestling Championships has finished, ending the Brock University in St. Catharines’ event. On the final day of the Championships, the event saw 26 junior and 34 senior entries compete for titles.

By weight-class, winners of today’s event have the opportunity to self-fund to attend the Pan Am Championships in Santiago, Chile in April and then earn a spot on the TO2015 Pan Am team. Greco-Roman wrestling involves only the upper body on both offense and defense. For Toronto, Greco-Roman competition will be contested in the 59kg, 66kg, 75kg, 85kg, 98kg and 130kg weight-classes.

“Wrestling Canada Lutte was happy with the entry numbers for the Greco-Roman event and the level of competition was high for the intense bouts,” says Wrestling Canada Lutte Executive Director Tamara Medwidsky. “Wrestling Canada Lutte thanks Brock University, the Brock Badgers Wrestling Club and the organizing committee for hosting a well-run and well-attended Championships.”

For Greco-Roman, in addition to the medals being presented, awards were announced. Based on ballots submitted during the competition, the Outstanding Junior Greco-Roman wrestler award went to 74kg champion Braeden Ambo of the London-Western Wrestling Club. The Outstanding Senior Greco-Roman wrestler award went to Guelph wrestling club’s Kevin Iwasa-Madge.

Other Greco-Roman awards presented included:

  • Provincial Team Award Junior Greco-Roman: Team Ontario
  • Club Team Award Senior Greco-Roman: Guelph Wrestling Club
  • Provincial Team Award Senior Greco-Roman: Team Ontario

The 2016 Junior / Senior Canadian Championships will take place in Fredericton, New Brunswick and are scheduled for March 18-20, 2016.
