Guelph welcomes the world to the Canada Cup

June 24, 2016

(Guelph, ON) – The Sleeman Centre will play host to the Canada Cup on Saturday, June 25, 2016 in Guelph, Ontario.

The Canada Cup of International Wrestling was initiated in the fall of 1980 by the Federal Government to provide Canada’s wrestlers with an alternative to the boycotted Olympic Games held in Moscow. The first host of this premier event was Lakehead University located in Thunder Bay, Ontario and featured the national teams of Canada, Hungary, Japan and USA. 1998 saw the addition of a women’s division for the 1st time in the tournament’s history.

Slated to compete at this year’s event are athletes from Canada, Chile, Cuba, Estonia, Germany, Japan, Switzerland, and USA. For some athletes this represents the final competition before heading to Rio for the Olympic Games in August.

Wrestling Canada Lutte (WCL) is also holding the team selection trials for the FISU World University Championships on Friday, June 24, 2016, starting at 10:00 am at the Sleeman Centre. The FISU Championships will be taking place in Corum, Turkey, from October 25-30, 2016.

WCL would like to acknowledge the Government of Canada’s support for the Canada Cup and would like to thank the event hosts and organizing committee including the Guelph Wrestling Club, as well as provincial wrestling partner, Ontario Amateur Wrestling Association.
