February 06, 2016

(Brampton, ON) – Wrestling Canada Lutte’s Team Trials concluded earlier today with an injury provision wrestle-off at the women’s 53 kg weight class.

Under the Olympic team selection policy, Jillian Gallays (Saskatoon WC) was granted an injury provision wrestle-off based on her bronze medal performance at the 2014 Senior World Championships. Jillian had to beat the second ranked athlete from the Trials in a single elimination match. And if successful, then had to win 2 straight matches against the December Trials winner.

In the first round of matches, being hosted at Turner Fenton High School, Jillian defeated Brianne Barry (Team Impact WC) 10-0. Moving to the final round, Jillian faced Samantha Stewart (Black Bears WC), winning 17-6 in the 1st match and 6-2 in the 2nd match.

Final Trials Rankings (FW 53 kg):

1 – Jillian Gallays
2 – Samantha Stewart
3 – Brianne Barry

Jillian will now join the rest of the Team Trials winners on the road to Olympic qualification at the upcoming Pan Am Olympic Qualification event in Frisco, USA on March 4-6, 2016, where the top 2 from each style and weight class will qualify for the Rio Games.
