Windsor Hosts 2017 Cadet / Juvenile Canadian Championships

April 03, 2017

(Ottawa, ON) – Canada’s top Cadet and Juvenile wrestlers are converging to the St. Denis Centre at the University of Windsor for the 2017 Cadet / Juvenile Canadian Championships and Cadet Team Trials from April 7-9 in Windsor, Ontario.

“We would like to thank the University of Windsor and the Championship Organizing Committee for their collaboration in hosting this important event. We would also like to thank the sponsors and suppliers who are supporting this event and the sport of wrestling,” noted Don Ryan, President of Wrestling Canada Lutte (WCL).

The list of confirmed participants, for all age and weight categories, is available here. Please note that draws will be finalized after weigh-ins are completed:

The Championships are being hosted by the University of Windsor and the Essex Wrestling Club, in collaboration with the Ontario Amateur Wrestling Association, as sanctioned by Wrestling Canada Lutte. The event will feature twelve competition mats and will include Men’s Freestyle and Women’s wrestling at the cadet level (15-16 years of age) as well as Men’s Freestyle, Greco-Roman and Women’s wrestling at the juvenile level (17-18 years of age). The event will also feature women’s Greco-Roman wrestling and Cadet Team Trials.

The Championships and the Cadet Team Trials have traditionally been the primary events for ranking athletes for cadet national team selections, however, recent changes in the international competition format may trigger some modifications. Wrestling Canada Lutte’s (WCL), High Performance Director, Leigh Vierling, and the technical staff will be reviewing the new international competition format and the impacts it will have on team selection in coming weeks. The 2017 Cadet World Championships will serve as the pilot event for this new competition format, which includes a 2-day tournament format and same-day weigh-ins.

Competition starts on Friday, April 7th with Cadet and Juvenile Men’s Freestyle, followed by the Men’s Freestyle Cadet Team Trials, Cadet and Juvenile women’s wrestling on Saturday, April 8th. Sunday, April 9th, the final day of competition, will include the Women’s Cadet Team Trials, as well as all Greco-Roman wrestling.
