Burgess and McNeil strike gold in Mexico
OAXTEPEC, Mexico – Lachlan McNeil and Nyla Burgess won gold, and Canadians took home ten medals from the Junior Pan-American Championships.
McNeil, 20, defeated wrestlers from Guatemala, USA, Cuba, and Peru en route to the 65 kg gold medal. He led the men’s freestyle team to a third-place finish behind USA and Mexico.
Burgess, of Team Impact Wrestling Club, reached the top of the podium by defeating Ecuador, USA, and Mexico.

The men’s team was boosted with medal performances from Carson Lee (silver, 79 kg), Karanpreet Gill (silver, 92 kg), Patrik Leder (silver, 74 kg), Dechlan Papadopoulos (bronze, 57 kg), and Amaan Gulacha (bronze, 70 kg).
On the women’s side, medallists included Aylah Mayali (silver, 65 kg), Jolie Brisco (silver, 59 kg), and Bronwyn MacGregor (bronze, 57 kg).
The junior team will now set their sights on the Junior World Championships, set for August 16 to 22 in Ufa, Russia.
