Canada narrowly misses podium at Senior World Championships
TIRANA, ALBANIA – Just a week after a double silver performance at the 2024 U23 World Championships, Canada almost celebrated another World Championship medal this week at the 2024 Senior World Championships – Non-Olympic Weight Categories, in Tirana, Albania. Montreal’s Laurence Beauregard found herself in a bronze medal match after working her way back through the repechage. Unfortunately, it was not to be as she lost the match and had to settle for a fifth-place finish.
Beauregard, who trains at the Montreal National Training Centre, began the women’s 59kg event with a narrow 8-8 loss on criteria to Mongolia’s Tserenchimed Sukhee. After Sukhee advanced to the final, Beauregard was brought back into the repechage. She first defeated Mexico’s Alejandra Rivera 10-0 and then bested Azerbaijan’s Alyona Kolesnik 15-4 to advance to the bronze medal match. In the bronze, she matched up against Mansi Mansi of India but dropped the match 5-0.
Women’s results
In other women’s action, Surrey, B.C.’s Karla Godinez Gonzalez was 10th at 55kg; St. Catharines, Ontario’s Olivia Di Bacco was 17th at 65kg; and Swift Current, Saskatchewan’s Aleah Nickel was 17th at 72kg.
Men’s results
The top finish on the men’s side went to Saskatoon’s Andrew Johnson at 92kg. Johnson earned a win in his opening match 10-7 over Israel’s Matthew Finesilver. Johnson would go on to finish 13th. The other men’s results included: Anmore, B.C.’s Peiman Biabani 16th at 70kg; Longueuil, Quebec’s Christopher Merlo 25th at 61kg; and Komoka, Ontario’s Adam Thomson 29th at 79kg.
