Canada’s Best Wrestlers Head to St. Catharines to Battle for Canadian Title and TO2015 Selection
(March 6, 2015) Ottawa – With not only Canadian Championship titles on the line, but also rankings for national team programs this summer, including TO2015, St. Catharines’ Brock University will be the site for the 2015 ASICS Junior / Senior Canadian Wrestling Championships March 20 – 22, 2015.
In addition to the Pam Am Games team, this Championship is the primary selection event for the Junior and Senior National Teams which will represent Canada at several international events leading up to the 2015 Junior World and Senior World Championships and also sets the ladder rankings for the Canadian Wrestling Team Trials in December in Strathcona. The Trial winners will be nominated to represent Canada through the qualification process for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
“This year’s ASICS Junior / Senior Canadian Wrestling Championships has been highly anticipated and will showcase battles in weight classes between athletes who are highly motivated and competition ready,” says Tamara Medwidsky, Executive Director at Wrestling Canada. “As 2015 is the Year of Sport, Wrestling Canada Lutte is ready to select the best to represent Canadian wrestling for TO2015.
This year’s event will be the second year the new United World Wrestling rules are in play as well as the new Olympic weight classes in the senior age category. The list of confirmed participants, for all age and weight categories, will be published after weigh-in sessions.
The 2015 ASICS Junior /Senior Canadian Wrestling Championships will take place at Brock University at the Ian Beddis Gym in the Walker Centre Complex, as sanctioned by Wrestling Canada Lutte. Junior and senior competition will include men’s freestyle, greco-roman and women’s wrestling. Weigh-ins will start on Thursday March 19th for junior competitors with junior preliminaries and finals and senior weigh-ins starting on March 20th. Saturday March 21st will bring senior preliminaries and gold medal senior matches. Saturday will also see the induction of a new athlete and builder in the Wrestling Canada Lutte Hall of Fame.
