Canadian wrestlers learn valuable lessons from U20 Worlds
PONTEVEDRA, SPAIN – It was a difficult competition for Canadian wrestlers at the 2024 World Championships in Pontevedra, Spain, September 2-8. The Canadians drew tough matches and while they did not return with any medals, they gained tremendous international experience that is sure to help moving forward.
Canada sent 13 wrestlers to the championships, who competed in women’s wrestling, men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman.
Women’s Results
The top finish from the event went to Hamilton’s Tehani Blais, who finished eighth. Blais earned a victory in her 72kg round of 16 match against Gia Kastelan of Croatia before being knocked out in the quarterfinal. Maple Ridge, B.C.’s Madisyn Grof was 10th at 55kg; Calgary’s Annika Fines was 11th at 67kg; St. Catharines, Ontario’s Vanessa Keefe was 13th at 68kg; Mount Hope, Ontario’s Shahreen Gulacha was 16th at 50kg; and St. Catharines’ Bronwyn MacGregor was 20th at 62kg.
Men’s Results
On the men’s side Abbotsford, B.C.’s Tejvir Dhinsa was 12th at 97kg; Surrey, B.C.’s Rohit Bal was 13th at 86kg; Mississauga’s Omogbai Asekomhe was 19th at 125kg; Pickering, Ontario’s Blayne Helou was 23rd at 61kg; Surrey’s Sehaj Sidhu was 24th at 70kg; and Cochrane, Alberta’s Nick Hooper was 27th at 74kg. Jorawar Dhinsa finished 14th in men’s 130kg Greco-Roman.
