Canadians ready for U20 World Championships

August 28, 2024

OTTAWA — Wrestling Canada Lutte (WCL) is proud to announce the athletes, coaches and support staff that will represent Canada at the 2024 U20 World Championships, Sept. 2-8, in Pontevedra, Spain. The group includes 13 athletes competing in men’s freestyle, Greco-Roman and women’s wrestling.

“The U20 World Championships is an opportunity for our wrestlers who have had some international success at the Pan-American (Pan-Am) level to test themselves against the very best the world has to offer,” said Chris Woodcroft, WCL High Performance Director. “We have a mixed group of competitors attending these championships, some of whom will be their first experience at the world level and others who were fortunate to be returning to the world stage. We look forward to watching our next generation of wrestlers in action.”

The 2024 version of the team comes into this event with strong momentum behind them after solid performances at the 2024 Pan-Am Championships, in Lima, Peru, this past July. On the women’s side, 2024 Pan-Am gold medalist Maple Ridge, British Columbia’s Madisyn Grof will compete at 55kg. Grof earned her gold medal with a strong performance winning all of her matches by technical superiority. Now, she will be looking to translate that success to the world stage when she takes to the mats in Spain.

As for the men, the team will sport a pair of recent continental silver medalists from this year’s Pan-Ams.  Abbotsford’s Tejvir Dhinsa earned his medal at 97kg and Mississauga’s Omogbai Asekomhe at 125kg. Both men will aim to build on those showings as they take on the best in the world in Spain.
