May 05, 2018

LIMA, Peru – Veronica Keefe won Canada’s first gold at the 2018 Senior Pan American Championships.

The 26-year-old from Oyster Bed Bridge, P.E.I., defeated Diana Crus Arroyo of Peru in the final match of the 72 kg round robin to clinch gold.

Keefe’s medal came shortly after three Canadian wrestlers picked up silvers.

Laurence Beauregard, of Montreal YMHA, secured a second place finish at 59 kg after being defeated by Andribeth Rivera Belliard. Beauregard had an early lead before being pinned by the Puerto Rican.

Cara Nania won the final match of her 55 kg round robin. The 23-year-old from the Calgary Dinos Wrestling Club defeated Lady Raysa Moran Valenzuela of Ecuador to capture silver.

Breanne Graham, competing at 65 kg, lost her lone match of the day against American Forrest Molinari. The loss meant Graham would captured her third senior Pan American Championship medal. She took home bronze in 2016, and silver in 2015.

Philip Barreiro, competing in the Greco-Roman 87 kg class, was a match away from a medal, but lost his bronze medal bout to Dominica’s Carlos Adames Palmer.

Earlier in the day, John Yeats, 77 kg, and Brayden Ambo, 82 kg, also competed in Greco-Roman.

Yeats, of Tristar Wrestling Club, fell to Brazil’s Marques More, while Ambo went 0-4 in his round robin.

In yesterday’s action, Joseph Dashou of London-Western Wrestling Club won his first match, before losing his quarterfinal bout and again in repechage against Luis Alfredo De Leon of Dominica and finished eighth out of eleven wrestlers at 67 kg Greco-Roman.

Thomas Barreiro fell to Dominica’s Jose Antonio Arias Parades 2-4, and finished 10th.

Adam MacFadyen was defeated in the four matches of his round-robin.
