Korey Jarvis Finishes Top Eight in Rio
(Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) – On the eve of closing ceremonies day, Korey Jarvis of Elliot Lake ON, finished eighth in the 125KG wrestling competition at the Rio Olympics.
In his first qualification round match Jarvis faced Ghasemi (IRI) and was defeated 5-2, forcing a waiting game. Ghasemi went on to win his next two matches and the silver medal, allowing Jarvis the opportunity to compete in the repechage in the evening session.
Jarvis, from the Guelph Wrestling Club, started well on his quest for a bronze medal, battling back through the repechage and confidently defeating Diaaeldin Kamal Gouda Abdelmottaleb of Egypt 7-0. In his next repechage match, Korey Jarvis wrestled Geno Petriashvili of Georgia. The Georgian and Korey were well matched, but in the end, despite posting 2 points the Georgian won 9-2. After the match Korey spoke to the media about his thoughts.
“I wrestled better here than I have in a long time,” said Jarvis. “I trained for this as hard as I could and because of that I am happy with my performance.”
Answering question of CBC Sports, as Jarvis stood in the mix zone, a Brazilian mother handed her baby to the media and insisted the baby be passed to the Canada wrestler. Jarvis was asked if it was the first time that had happened.
“Yep, first time that has happened,” said Jarvis. “It’s the beard, people find it comforting.”
Canada’s last wrestling entry for the 2016 Olympic wrestling competition will be three-time Olympian Haislan Garcia who competes tomorrow on closing ceremonies day.
