Laurence Beauregard wins World bronze medal in Croatia
ZAGREB, CROATIA – Canada has won it’s first medal at the 2025 World Championships thanks to Montreal’s Laurence Beauregard. Beauregard captured a bronze medal on day four of the championships in the Women’s Wrestling 59kg weight class.
Beauregard, from Montreal Wrestling Club, faced off with Norway’s Othelie Hoeie in the bronze-medal match. Despite surrendering a passivity point and a step out, to trail 2-0, Beauregard didn’t quit. She earned a takedown and exposure to move ahead 4-2 before earning the win by pin.
“Winning a world bronze medal means everything to me. I can’t even put it into words,” said Beauregard after the win.
Beauregard has found success at the continental level in the past, having won four gold medals at the Pan-American Championships. However, this was her first medal at the Worlds on her fourth World Championship appearance. She spoke about what the accomplishment means to her in her wrestling journey. “It means that development keeps going. I obviously want more, and I think that moving forward, I need to focus more on the process rather than the outcome because I wanted this badly for a long time.”
The tournament began for Beauregard with a round of 16 win over Arian Carpio of the Philippines by superiority 10-0. Next, she advanced to faced Türkiye’s Bediha Gun in the quarterfinals, where Beauregard prevailed on criteria 6-6. In the semifinals, she squared off with Mariia Vynnyk from Ukraine. Vynnyk took the match 10-5, sending Beauregard to the bronze-medal match.
Canada’s newest medallist took the opportunity to thank her support team who has helped her along the way. “Thanks for everything. It is an individual sport but without our club, coaches, partners, friends, and family there wouldn’t be these moments.”
For Canada, this is the first World Championships medal since 2022. Canada still has four athletes in the running and two days of competition remaining.
