Leaders emerge during second day of Wrestling at Canada Games

ST. JOHN’S – Canada Games wrestling continued on Aug. 21, from Glacier Arena in St. John’s, Newfoundland, with more of the team duals competition. Pool action concluded for the men, with the winners and finalists being crowned. Meanwhile, things are shaping up on the women’s side with final matches set to determine the medal round.

Once the pool rankings are set, the teams will cross over to determine the final rankings with the top teams in each pool meeting to decide the gold medal, second for bronze, and so on down.

Women’s

Pool A

British Columbia and Saskatchewan remained tied atop Pool A with 4-0 records. After beating Yukon and Newfoundland and Labrador on Day 1, B.C. scored a pair of wins over Nova Scotia and Manitoba during Day 2. They currently have 211 points. As for Saskatchewan, they followed up Day 1 wins over Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia, with wins over Manitoba and Yukon and have a total of 209 points. The two leaders will meet tomorrow to determine the winner of the pool.

Pool B

Pool B has a similar story with Ontario and Alberta tied atop with unbeaten 5-0 record. Both teams have beaten New Brunswick, Quebec, Prince Edward Island, Nunavut and Northwest Territories. Ontario holds a slight edge in the total points at 248-240, but the two teams will battle tomorrow with the winner taking the group and a spot in the gold-medal match.

Men’s

Pool A

Ontario and Quebec were tied atop Pool A entering Day 2 and after they both defeated all other teams in the pool, met to determine the winner. The final was all Ontario, who took the win and finished atop the pool to advance to the gold-medal match. Ontario finished with a 5-0 record and 222 points.

Pool B

Pool B also had a tie atop the standings entering the day between Alberta and B.C. The two teams met in the final dual of the day where B.C. came out victorious. With the win, they finished the pool 6-0 with 276 points.

Tomorrow, Ontario will take on B.C. with the winner claiming the gold medal.
