Nordhagen Junior Classic Descends on the Olympic Oval
As one of the pioneers of women’s wrestling in Canada and internationally, Christine Nordhagen, a 6-time World Champion and 2004 Olympian, understood the need for international competition for young wrestlers. It was her dream to develop a tournament to bring together the best countries in the world to compete in Calgary, Alberta.
The Nordhagen Junior Classic will be held at the Calgary Olympic Oval on May 14, 2016, followed by the Junior Commonwealth Championships on May 15, 2016. Wrestlers will then be participating in an international training camp.
Participation includes:
- Australia
- Canada
- Germany
- Malta
“We are very excited that Canada is an attractive destination for international teams to train and compete in. This tournament is an important part of our program development”, said Christine Nordhagen, Tournament Chair. We would also like to acknowledge the financial support of the Government of Canada for the hosting of the Nordhagen Junior Classic.
The Nordhagen Junior Classic is part of a larger Canadian combat sport initiative that will see Taekwondo, Judo and Wrestling hosting their respective events simultaneously under the same roof. “We would like to thank our event co-sports Taekwondo and Judo, and their leaders for seeing this great initiative to fruition. It is a great example of sports joining forces and a great opportunity for our wrestling community to witness our combat sport friends in action”, said Wrestling Canada Lutte’s Executive Director, Tamara Medwidsky.
