Olympian and Canadian wrestling standout Alex Moore announces retirement
OTTAWA – Montreal’s Alex Moore, a 2024 Olympian who proudly donned the maple leaf on wrestling mats around the world, has announced his retirement from competitive wrestling. A product of the Montreal Wrestling Club, the 28-year-old Moore closes a career marked by perseverance, national titles and international success.
On the world stage, Moore proudly represented Canada in multiple major events, including the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, where he competed in the men’s freestyle 86kg division, finishing ninth.
He also earned notable placements at the Pan American Championships: silver in 2023, bronze in 2019, and gold in 2017 as a junior. Moore represented Canada at six World Championships, a Pan American Games and two Commonwealth Games, including 2022 where he won a bronze medal. He is a nine-time Canadian National Champion (four Senior, five Age Groups).
“It was an honour and a privilege to represent my country. I’m grateful to have been born and raised in Canada,” Moore said when reflecting on his journey. “I’m a product of this system; I trained here and stuck with the same coaches my entire career. Representing Canada meant being part of something bigger than me, and being able to do it from here, with the people who helped shape me along the way, is something I’m very proud of.”
When asked about his fondest wrestling memory, Moore pointed to his first national title. “My greatest memory was winning my first national title in my first year as a cadet in 2012. Funny enough, that moment meant more to me than even qualifying for the Olympics. I can’t fully explain why, it just did. It’s a moment that will always put a smile on my face. Making the Olympic team and achieving a childhood dream is right up there as well.”
Looking back, Moore says his time in the sport has helped shape his values and future aspirations. “Wrestling shaped who I am. It built my character, taught me discipline, and showed me what it means to fully commit to a goal and see it through. As for future plans with the sport, I’m building the next chapter of my career right now, but I do look forward to giving back in a meaningful way when the time is right. Wrestling will always be a part of me.”
Wrestling Canada Lutte congratulates Moore on a great career and thanks him for his contributions to the sport in Canada and the national team program.
