WCL to Induct Two Ontario Natives to the 2017 Hall of Fame

March 14, 2017

(Ottawa, ON) – Wrestling Canada Lutte (WCL) announced today the class of 2017 to be inducted into the Wrestling Canada Lutte Hall of Fame. For 2017, Marty Calder will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in the Athlete Category and William Hogarth will be inducted as a builder. The inductions will take place March 25, 2017 at the 2017 Junior / Senior Canadian Wrestling Championships at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario.

“It is a great honour for us to welcome two new inductees into the Hall of Fame,” says WCL President Don Ryan. “The opportunity to recognize the accomplishments of these individuals, in their home province, is a particularly special occasion. We thank the Awards and Hall of Fame Committee for their continued dedication to the nomination process”.

A two-time Olympian (1992, 1996), and seven-time National Champion, Marty Calder represented Canada with passion and intensity for over a decade, in Men’s Freestyle Wrestling. Marty speaks modestly to his many accomplishments, which include a fifth place at the 1993 Senior World Championships, 1994 Commonwealth Games gold, 7th place at the 1996 Olympic Games, 1999 Pan Am Games bronze, to name a few.

Upon retiring from competition, Marty transitioned to a successful coaching career with the Brock University Badgers and Brock Wrestling Club programs where he continues to develop and inspire Canada’s next generation of wrestlers.

“I’m honoured to have my name included in the Wrestling Canada Lutte Hall of Fame,” says Calder. “Wrestling has given me so much life experience, challenge and camaraderie. It has allowed me to pursue high performance both as a coach and as an athlete and that kept me on the path to productivity versus destruction! Lifelong friendships in this sport have enriched my life and help me to teach myself how to be better. I’m grateful and humbled by this recognition.”

Hogarth’s contributions to wrestling span well over two decades. William, or Bill, as everyone knows him, served as Team Manager for two Olympic Games teams, two Senior Pan Am Championship teams, as well as two Junior and two Senior World Championships teams. Domestically, Bill served as Team Manager for Ontario’s Canada Games team and on three separate occasions as Provincial Team Manager for Ontario. More recently, we saw Bill volunteering at the TO2015 Games and the Rio Games in the wrestling venue.

“I am deeply honoured with this award. It is very humbling to be included in such select fraternity as the WCL Hall OF Fame. Thank you to all the people who I have worked with through the years who had a great deal to do with my success,” said Hogarth.

The Wrestling Canada Lutte Hall of Fame was established in 1975 to recognize outstanding achievement and contribution to Olympic wrestling in or for Canada. There are two categories of membership in the Hall of Fame, the athlete category and the builder category. The athlete category recognizes the achievements of those wrestlers who have represented Canada at major international competitions or Games. The builder category formally recognizes the contribution, leadership and abilities of those individuals who participate in the development of wrestling.
