Winners crowned at the 2022 Canadian Non-Olympic Weight Class Trials
SUMMERSIDE, PEI – The city of Summerside, PEI played host to the 2022 Canadian Non-Olympic Weight Class Trials on July 1. It was the kickoff event to a full week of wrestling in the city that also featured the Canada Cup and international training camp.
The event, hosted at Credit Union Place, was used to determine representatives for non-Olympic weight classes contested at the World Championships, Sept. 10-18 in Belgrade, Serbia. The weight classes contested were: women’s (WW): 55, 59, 65, 72 kg; and men’s freestyle (FS): 61, 70, 79, 92 kg.
Women’s Results
The women’s 55kg went to Karla Godinez Gonzalez (Burnaby Mountain WC). The weight class featured five competitors and Godinez Gonzalez went 4-0 in the round robin.
The women’s 59kg weight class saw six competitors battle in a single elimination bracket. The final came down to Laurence Beauregard (Montreal -NTC) and Diana Weicker (Brock WC). A late flurry of scores helped propel Weicker to the 10-0 win.
In the women’s 65kg weight class, it was Aleah Nickel from Edmonton WC who emerged victorious. Nickel was a perfect 3-0 in her round robin to finish first.
The women’s 72kg weight class was won by Shauna Kuebeck, from Brock WC. Kuebeck was 2-0 heading into her third-round match against Taylor Follensbee (Saskatoon WC), who also held a 2-0 record. In an exciting final match, Kuebeck took the victory 8-3 to claim the weight class.
Men’s Results
The men’s 61kg weight class came down to Jason Luneau (Montreal-NTC) and Garette Saunders (Brock WC) who both entered the match with records of 2-0. Trailing 3-0 late, Saunders scored a takedown to cut the lead to 3-2. However, Luneau was able to hang on for the 3-2 victory.
The men’s 70kg weight class had the highest number of entries with nine competitors vying for the title. The bracket came down to Emmanuel Olapade (Dinos WC) and Vincent De Marinis. De Marinis came away with the victory in this one 14-3.
In the men’s 79kg the round robin finished with three competitors all at 3-1. The tie included Sam Barmish (Montreal -NTC), Jasmit Phulka (Burnaby Mountain WC) and Adam Thomson (London-Western WC). Thanks to the tie-breaking criteria, Barmish was declared the winner.
The men’s 92kg weight class was a bracket that came down to a pair of wrestlers from Brock WC, Richard DesChatelets and Ignatius Pitt. DesChatelets walked away with a victory by fall.
