Canada captures four bronze medals at Senior Pan Ams

LIMA, Peru – Canada went four for eight in bronze medal matches on day three of the Senior Pan American Championships.

The team had eight chances at bronze medals and got wins from Jade Dufour, Alexandra Town, Shawn Daye Finley, and Dalton Webb.

Jade Dufour of Montreal YMHA was down 1-2 at the half to Argentina’s Evelin Sosa, but came out strong early in the second and dominated to a 14-2 victory to earn bronze at 50 kg.

York Wrestling Club’s Alexandria Town dominated Yessica Oviedo Perez of Dominca and quickly took a 10-0 lead to secure bronze at 57 kg.

Shawn Daye Finley of the Edmonton Bears Wrestling Club captured Canada’s first medal for the men with a win in the 79 kg bronze medal match against Peru’s Marcos Quesada Martinez.

Dalton Webb won by default in the fourth match of his round robin after his opponent did not compete due to injury. Webb, of Guelph Wrestling Club had defeated Fabio Rodrigues of Brazil earlier in the day.

Four others competed for bronze medals Saturday night.

Kristina McLaren of the Brock Wrestling Club faced off against Betzabeth Arguello Villegas of Venezuela. McLean lead 3-2 after the final whistle, but a Venezuelan challenge changed the outcome to a 3-4 loss for the 21-year-old.

Linda Morais of Montreal YMHA went up 1-0 in the 62 kg bronze medal match against USA’s Kayla Miracle, but it wasn’t enough as Miracle came back to win 1-6.

Temitope Ogunjimi went down 0-7 early against Peru’s Yanet Sovero Nino in the 68 kg bronze medal bout. She battled back in the second half but she came up short as the Calgary Dino lost 6-7.

Guelph Wrestling Club’s Gracelynn Doogan lost her 76 kg bronze medal match 2-8 to Andrimar Lazaro Diaz of Venezuela.
