Canadian wrestlers win six medals at 2023 Cadet Pan-American Championships

MEXICO CITY— Canadian wrestlers had a good showing at the 2023 Cadet Pan-American Championships, June 22-24, in Mexico City, Mexico, capturing six medals from the competition. The team was led by a gold medal performance by Abbotsford, B.C.’s Michealjeet Grewal who stood atop the podium at 92kg.

Grewal, who trains at Guru Gobind Singh WC, was dominant at the event. He was in a five-person round robin and won by technical superiority over all four of his opponents. He scored a total of 47 points, and only surrendered seven in a 17-7 win over American Aiden Cooley, who took silver.

Fellow Guru Gobind Singh WC member and Abbotsford resident Jagroop Dhinsa also took home a medal as he finished second in the 110kg weight class. Dhinsa, went 2-1 in his round robin to win the silver.

Calgary’s Zakir Ibrahimkhil also had a silver medal performance. Ibrahimkhil, from The ROC, was in a bracket at 45kg and won a pair of matches on route to the final where he lost to American Henry Aslikyan.

Montreal’s Cruz Lewis won a bronze at 60kg. The Montreal – NTC product won his quarterfinal match before falling in the semifinal to the eventual gold medalist Yandro Soto of Puerto Rico. Lewis made the most of his bronze medal match defeating Lucas De Oliveira of Brazil by superiority.

Other men’s results included: Guelph, Ontario’s Casey Harkely fourth at 65kg; Embro, Ontario’s Wesley Heather fifth at 48kg; and Ottawa’s Kyler Keogh eighth at 71kg.

On the women’s side, there were a pair of bronze medalists. Longueuil, Quebec’s Beatrice Galaise, Montreal-NTC, earned the medal in the women’s 73kg weight class with a win in her third round-robin match over Bruna De Souza of Brazil. Meanwhile, Nobleton, Ontario’s Manavi Asthana, from Independent WC earned her medal by finishing third in the women’s 40kg round robin.

The other women’s results were: Oshawa, Ontario’s Emma Chartres fourth at 46kg; Calgary’s Ava Guay fourth at 49kg; Marieville, Quebec’s Rose Lacoste fourth at 69kg; St. Laurent, Manitoba’s Anaka Chartrand fifth at 61kg; Calgary’s Mackenzie Cayer sixth at 57kg; and Calgary’s Paige Veloso sixth at 65kg.
