Canadian Wrestling Championships wrap up with seniors

MONTREAL – The Canadian Wrestling Championships concluded on May 30^th from Centre Pierre Charbonneau in Montreal as the senior division took centre stage. It was an action- packed day that saw favorites and underdogs claim national titles and spots on the national team.

Senior Women

Ontario led the way for the women with four gold medalists. The medals were won by: Kaura Coles, London-Western WC at 53kg; Mia Friesen, Brock WC at 57kg; Ella Doornaert, London-Western WC, at 68kg; and Nyla Burgess, Team Impact at 76kg.

The Team Award went to Edmonton WC who narrowly edged out London-Western WC and Dinos WC. Edmonton finished with 32 points, one better than both London-Western and Dinos.

The Most Outstanding Wrestler went to Brock’s Mia Friesen who came through a tough 57kg division and claimed gold.

Senior Men

The men’s side saw a battle between Ontario and British Columbia when it came to gold medals with each capturing four. Ontario’s were won by: Timothy Levine, Team Impact at 57kg; Blayne Helou, London-Western WC at 61kg; Lachlan McNeil, Team Impact at 74kg; and Zaur Arsagov, Brock WC at 97kg. As for B.C., their medals were won by: Peiman Biabani, Burnaby Mountain WC at 65kg; Kade Brown, Coast RTC at 70kg; Owen Martin, Burnaby Mountain WC at 86kg; and Jorawar Dhinsa, Burnaby Mountain WC at 125kg.

The Men’s Team Award went to Burnaby Mountain who finished with 57 points. Second was London-Western at 30.

The Most Outstanding Wrestler for the men was Lachlan McNeil who captured gold at 74kg.

Award Winners

Throughout the tournament, the Wrestler of the Year awards for 2025 were handed out. The winners were: Cadets – Women, Kamryn Mason, Coast RTC; Men, Nathan Nash; Juniors – Women, Annika Fines, Dinos WC; Men – Kade Brown, Coast RTC; Seniors – Women, Laurence Beauregard, Montreal WC; and Men- Peiman Biabani, Burnaby Mountain WC.

Hall of Fame

The final day of the Championships also saw the 2026 Wrestling Canada Lutte Hall of Fame ceremony. The ceremony honoured this year’s inductee: Martine Dugrenier. Dugrenier becomes the 102^nd member of the Hall of Fame, joining the athlete’s category.

1976 Team Celebration

The day also saw a special ceremony honouring the 1976 Canadian Olympic Wrestling Team. Eleven members of the team were present for the ceremony: Ray Takahashi (48kg), Gord Bertie (52kg), Mike Barry (57kg), Egon Beiler (63kg), Howard Strupp (66kg), Clive Llewellyn (68kg), Brian Renken (74kg FS & GR), Richard Deschatelets (82kg), Terry Paice (90kg), Steve Daniar (100kg), Mitch Kawasaki (GR 48kg). In addition, Greco-Roman Team Coach, Louis Kupsik and 1976 Wrestling Competition Director Jay Bradburry took part in the ceremony.
