Canadian Wrestling Trials kicks off with Cadets

May 27, 2022

The Canadian Wrestling Trials officially kicked off on May 26, at the University of Alberta’s Butterdome, with the Cadets taking to the mats first. It was a great start to the week as there was a true sense of optimism among those in attendance that this was a return to normalcy in the wrestling world.

At the end of the day, it was Alberta that reigned supreme on the women’s side to win the Provincial Team Award. Meanwhile, it was B.C. who took home the Provincial Team Award for the men.

Winning the women’s Club Team Award was Coast Wrestling Academy from Burnaby, British Columbia, with 20 points, edging out Dinos Wrestling Club, from Calgary, who finished second with 11. On the men’s side, it was another B.C. club taking top honours with Guru Gobind Singh Wrestling Club, out of Abbotsford, B.C., finishing first with 28 points, one better than Coast Wrestling Academy.

Most Outstanding Wrestler awards for the Cadets went to Paige Veloso, from The Roc Wrestling Club in Calgary who won gold in the women’s 65kg weight class. Nathan Rainville, from Patriotes Wrestling Clubs in St-Césaire, Quebec was the men’s Most Outstanding Wrestler, he earned gold in the men’s 65kg weight class.
