Champions crowned at 2025 Canadian U23 Wrestling Championships

THOROLD, ON — The 2025 Canadian U23 Wrestling Championships and Sr., Jr. Greco-Roman, & Non-Olympic Weight Class Trials began on June 27th from Canada Games Park in Thorold, Ontario. The opening day saw the U23 athletes in action as they looked to be crowned national champions and earn a spot on the national team for the U23 World Championships, Oct. 20-26 in Serbia.

Women’s Results

On the women’s side it was Ontario who took home the top honours with 47 points. They had four gold medalists including: Serena Di Benedetto, Hamilton WC, at 53kg; Mia Friesen, Brock WC, at 57kg, Olivia Lichti, Hamilton WC, at 59kg; and Nyla Burgess, Team Impact WC, at 76kg.

The Club Team Award went to Brock WC with 23 points.

The Most Outstanding Wrestler for the women went to Angelina Ellis-Toddington, Dinos WC, who captured gold in the 68kg weight class.

The rest of the women’s gold medalists were: Madison MacKenzie, Burnaby Mountain WC, at 50kg; Sophia Bechard, Montreal WC, at 55kg; Annika Fines, Dinos WC, at 62kg; Maria Sawiak, Edmonton WC, at 65kg; and Vianne Rouleau, Edmonton WC, at 72kg.

Men’s Results

The top province on the men’s side was Ontario with 60 points. They featured three champions, including: Blayne Helou, Hamilton WC, at 61kg; Ryan Dahcha, Matmen WC, at 65kg; and Cole Coghill, Brock WC, at 70kg.

Burnaby Mountain WC earned the Club Team Award. They finished with 38 points. They were led by gold medalists: Sehajpal Sidhu at 74kg, Sam Pereira at 97kg and Jorawar Dhinsa at 125kg.

The Most Outstanding Wrestler for the men went to Connor Church, Montreal Wrestling Club, for his performance on route to winning gold at 79kg.

The other gold medalists for the men were: Javier Tonita-Charriez, Advanced WA, at 57kg; Aidan Stevenson, Edmonton WC, at 86kg; and Judah Arthurs, Saskatoon WC, at 92kg.

The competition continues tomorrow with the Senior World Team Trials (non-Olympic weights) and Senior, Junior Greco-Roman Championships. Wrestling begins at 10 a.m. local. Spectators are welcome to attend, and tickets can be purchased at the door. The event will also be streamed on FloWrestling.
