Dhesi takes gold, Weicker silver, and Stewart bronze at Matteo Pellicone

March 06, 2021

ROME – Canada added three more medals to it’s haul from the Matteo Pellicone, bringing the total up to six. Amar Dhesi got the men started with gold, while Diana Wicker and Samantha Stewart picked up silver and bronze medals.

Dhesi, from Surrey, B.C., won three of his four matches in the 125 kg round robin. The 25-year-old lost his final match to Kazakhstan’s Yusup Batirmurzaev, but his wins earlier in the day were enough to secure the gold medal.

Weicker and Stewart were matched up in the same 53 kg round robin group, and wrestled each other for the top seed in the group. Weicker came out on top 9-4.

In the finals, Weicker, from Kentville, N.S., couldn’t get on the board and lost to India’s Vinesh Phogat 4-0. Stewart won her bronze medal match with a pin on Nandini Bajirao Salokhe, also from India.

Action resumes tomorrow with Dillon Williams, Clayton Pye, and Hunter Lee hitting the mats in Rome.

The Matteo Pellicone is part of United World Wrestling’s Ranking Series, and will contribute towards seeding points at the Tokyo Olympics.
