Di Bacco gets upset victory, Wiebe wins a close one at Women’s Team Trials
TORONTO – After a drama filled day of wrestling in Toronto, the women’s Olympic weight-class rankings have been decided for the 2018 Senior World Championships.
Barring wrestle-offs for injury provisions, the top finisher in each event will represent Canada at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, in October.
Olivia Di Bacco of Brock Wrestling Club upset Commonwealth Games silver medallist Danielle Lappage to claim victory at 68 kg. The two were the lone competitors in the weight-class, and Di Bacco came away with a 4-1 victory after a failed challenge from Lappage in the final seconds.
Meanwhile at 76 kg, Olympic Champion Erica Wiebe faced off against 2017 World Championships bronze medallist Justina Di Stasio. The two had a back and forth match that saw multiple lead changes, but after six minutes it was Wiebe who was ahead 3-2.
Alexandria Town proved to be too much for the rest of the 57 kg weight class. The York wrestler won her matches 10-0, 6-0, and 13-2 against Emily Schaefer, Samantha Stewart, and Hannah Taylor.
Linda Morais of Montreal YMHA took top spot at 62 kg. She defeated Breanne Graham and Jessica Brouilette 13-2 and 10-1. The field was missing Commonwealth Games silver medallist who is recovering from a knee injury sustained at the games.
Brock Wrestling Club and Commonwealth Games teammates Diana Weicker and Jessica MacDonald finished atop their 53 kg and 50 kg weight classes. Weicker won two close matches against Abby Lloyd 9-6 and Kristina McLaren 10-9.
Event winners:
50 kg – Jessica MacDonald – Brock Wrestling Club
53 kg – Diana Weicker – Brock Wrestling Club
57 kg – Alexandria Town – York Wrestling Club
62 kg – Linda Morais – Montreal YMHA
68 kg – Olivia Di Bacco – Brock Wrestling Club
76 kg – Erica Wiebe – Dinos Wrestling Club
The 2018 Senior World Championships are being held in Budapest, Hungary, from October 20 to 28.
The Trials were held due to a conflict between the Junior / Senior Canadian Championships and the Women’s World Cup in March.
Non-Olympic weight-class spots will be selected at the Non-Olympic Weight Senior World Team Trials on July 6.
