Hannah Taylor highlights winners at 2022 Canada Cup

SUMMERSIDE, PEI – A talented field of competitors from four countries: Canada, Jamaica, Republic of Korea, and the United States battled it out for international supremacy as the 2022 Canada Cup was contested on July 2, at Credit Union Palace in Summerside, PEI.

All eyes were on the women’s 57kg weight class as local hopeful Hannah Taylor, from Summerside, now training out of Brock Wrestling Club, was the favorite. However, it was one of the deepest divisions in the competition with seven strong competitors. Taylor progressed to the final where she faced a former U23 World Champion in Alexandria Town, from York WC.

Town opened the scoring with a force out but soon after, Taylor countered an attack by Town and turned it into a dramatic pin for the win. The hometown crowd erupted as Taylor captured gold.

Women’s Results

In the women’s 50kg weight class, Nyla Valencia, representing the United States, was victorious in a five-woman round robin. Valencia was a perfect 4-0 in the event on route to capturing the gold.

The women’s 53kg weight class was a five-woman round robin competition that was won by Jade Dufour (Montreal – NTC) who went 4-0.

The women’s 62kg weight class saw a field of six compete for the title. The final came down to Aleah Nickel (Edmonton WC) and Diana Weicker (Brock WC). The match was even early on before Weicker opened the scoring and took a 3-0 lead to the break. Weicker scored an impressive takedown in the second period and converted it into a pin for the win.

The women’s 68kg was a round robin that was won by Linda Morais (Montreal – NTC). Morais was a perfect 2-0 during the event.

In the women’s 76kg, it came down to Taylor Follensbee (Saskatoon WC) and Vianne Rouleau (Edmonton WC). In the match, Follensbee scored early and was then able to win the match by fall.

Men’s Results

The men’s 57kg weight saw a final match between Logan Sloan (Saskatoon WC) and Freddie Aziz (Dinos WC). Sloan got on the board early and turned his groundwork into a win by pin, to take the gold.

In the men’s 65kg weight class, it was Lachlan McNeil, from Team Impact WC, who captured the top spot. The weight class was contested as a round robin and McNeil went 3-0.

The men’s 70kg weight class was a five-man round robin that was won by Daniel Coles (London Western WC).

In the men’s 74kg weight class, it was a three-competitor round robin where each competitor scored a win. Thanks to his victory by fall, Guysyn Ruslanzada (Montreal – NTC), earned the tiebreaker and won the weight class.

The 79kg weight class saw Jasmit Phulka (Burnaby Mountain WC) come out on top of the three-man round robin.

The men’s 92kg weight class was a four-person round robin. Andrew Johnson, from Saskatoon WC, was the winner with a record of 3-0.

Richard DesChatelets (Brock WC) was declared the winner in the 97kg weight class.

The 125kg weight class came down to Jamaica’s Aaron Anth Johnson and Roger Li, Brock Wrestling Club. With Johnson up 4-0 he scored a big four-point takedown to extend his lead. Li did cut into the lead, but time ran out and Johnson won the gold 11-4.
