Men’s Freestyle Wrestling Takes Over in Vegas

(Las Vegas, USA) – As the 2015 World Championships in Las Vegas Nevada approach their conclusion, the men’s freestyle competition takes over for wrestling fans from around the world.

On the fifth day of competition at the 2015 World Championships in Las Vegas, the men’s freestyle weight classes competing on the mats included Pan Am Games Silver Medalist Arjun Gill (97KG) of the Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club, 2015 Pan Am Games Bronze Medalist at 86KG Tamerlan Tagziev of Team Impact, at 61KG Michael Asselstine (Bears WC) and completing the Vegas Worlds’ Canadian women’s entries; Breanne Graham (60KG) of the Dinos Wrestling Club.

First up for Canada on day five was Tamerlan Tagziev (86KG) against European Silver Medalist Gheorghita Stefan of Romania. With the best-in-the-world in attendance looking to make their mark heading into an Olympic year, the competition level was high. The Romanian beat Tagziev 2-0 and set the stage for a challenging day for Canada.

In the 61KG weight-class, Michael Asselstine of Edmonton faced Aleksandr Bogomoev of Russia, the 2015 European Games Champion. In the Qualification round, Asselstine failed to advance (10-0).

For the last female wrestling weight-class at the 2015 World Championships, Breanne Graham (60KG) faced Oksana Herhel of Ukraine, the bronze medalist at the 2015 European Championships. The Ukrainian won the bout against Graham 4-0, but because the Ukrainian athlete was beaten in a subsequent round, Graham competed in the repechage against Netreba of Azerbaijan. The match was a hard fought one, but Graham lost 12-5.

The last entry for Canada on day five was Arjun Gill (97KG). In his round of 16 match he met Egzon Shala Albania on mat A. Gill convincingly won the match 13-2. In his next match in the round of eight, Gill faced Elizbar Odikadze Georgia, who was fifth at the 2014 World Championships. Odikadze won the bout in the end 5-3.

Day six at the 2015 World Championships in Las Vegas, the last day of competition will see four Canadian men’s freestyle weight-classes compete. Canadian entries include 2014 Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist, and 2015 Pan Am Games Silver Medalist Korey Jarvis (125KG) of Guelph, the 2014 Commonwealth Games Bronze Medalist at 74KG Jevon Balfour (Brock WC), John Pineda (57KG) from the Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club and Team Impact’s Cruiz Manning (70KG).
