Wrestling Canada Celebrates Gold Medal and Women’s Team at Canada House

August 19, 2016

(Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) – On the day following Erica Wiebe’s gold medal win in the 75KG category at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) hosted a sport celebration at Canada House which included all six members of the Canadian Olympic women’s wrestling team, including Jasmine Mian (48KG), Jillian Gallays (53KG), Michelle Fazzari (58KG), Danielle Lappage (63KG), Dory Yeats (69KG) and 2016 Olympic Champion Erica Wiebe (75KG).

With the women’s wrestling event now finished and high anticipation for the Canadian men to wrestle, the sports celebrations allow the athletes, coaches and managers to interact with family, mission team and guests in a home away from home. At the event, the #6Pack were paraded in along with the athletes from the women’s basketball team and the beach volleyball and volleyball athletes. In front of family and friends the women’s team were celebrated for their accomplishments and asked for their favourite memory.

Tomorrow, 2014 Commonwealth Games Champion Korey Jarvis of Elliot Lake will wrestle within the 125KG weight-class. Jarvis is ready for what the day brings and looks forward to the intensity of the matches.

“It’s a rush,” says Jarvis. “Going out there showing and what you have, it’s all mind and body. Just you and the other wrestler.”

The wrestling competition for Canada will continue August 21, 2016 with the men’s freestyle competition for Cuban born, three-time Olympian Haislan Garcia.
