Canada adds five medals to haul at Senior Pan-Am Championships
CORALVILLE, IA – The Senior Pan-American (Pan-Am) Championships continued May 9 from Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa. After capturing three medals on the first day, Canada added an additional five during day two. The day saw the conclusion of Women’s Wrestling, along with the first three Men’s Freestyle weight classes.
Women’s results
Canada won a trio of silver medals on the women’s side beginning with Stoney Creek, Ontario’s Serena Di Benedetto. The Hamilton WC product opened her event with a 9-4 win in the 53kg quarterfinal over Chile. She advanced to face Brazil in the semifinal and came away with a win by fall to advance to the gold medal match against Ecuador’s Lucia Yepez. Yepez would get the better of Di Benedetto however, forcing her to settle for the silver.
Montreal’s Laurence Beauregard continued her streak of Pan-Am medals, with her third in a row, by capturing silver at 59kg. The Montreal WC product was in a four-woman round robin and came away with victories over Brazil (10-0) and Mexico (injury forfeit). Her only blemish was a loss to American Abigail Nette, but with two wins and just the one loss, she earned silver.
Calgary’s Miki Rowbottom also picked a silver medal. The Dinos WC member went 1-1 in her round robin at 65kg, defeating Mexico but losing to the USA.
Rounding out the women’s results was Edmonton’s Vianne Rouleau who finished ninth at 76kg.
The Canadian women finished second overall in the team rankings.
Men’s Results
The men picked up a pair of bronze medals from St. Catharines, Ontario’s Garette Saunders at 61kg and Komoka, Ontario’s Adam Thomson at 74kg. For Saunders, he was in a round robin. He defeated Jamaica 14-3 but lost to USA. Still, he advanced to the semifinal. In the semifinal, he was defeated by Puerto Rico, putting him in the bronze medal match against Guatemala. In the match, Saunders picked up his second win of the day 12-5, securing the medal.
As for Thomson, London-Western WC, he earned a 5-3 win in the quarterfinal over the Dominican Republic, before losing a close semifinal 6-5 to Cuba. That put him in a bronze medal match with Mexico. In the match, he came away with a 10-0 win to capture the medal.
Rounding out the men’s results for the day was Edmonton’s Taran Goring who finished 9th at 86kg.
The Senior Pan-Ams wrap up tomorrow with the remaining Men’s Freestyle weight classes (57kg, 65kg, 70kg, 79kg, 92kg, 97kg and 125kg).
