Canadians aim for the podium at U23 World Championships
BUCHAREST, Romania – Nine women and nine men will be looking for spots on the podium at the second U23 World Championships in Bucharest, Romania.
Gracelynn Doogan of the Guelph Wrestling Club is the lone returning medallist. Doogan, 22, captured silver at 76 kg at the inaugural edition of the championships in 2017.
Alexandria Town and Darthe Capellan are fresh off performances at the 2018 Senior World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Town narrowly missed out on competing in the 57 kg bronze medal match, but was defeated in the repechage round.
“The U23 Worlds offer us the opportunity to get world level competition for our wrestlers,” said Tonya Verbeek, International Coach for Wrestling Canada Lutte. “We see this as a top-level tournament that will help our younger senior athletes work towards their ultimate goal of winning World and Olympic medals.”
The team will compete November 14 to 18 at the Polyvalent Hall in Tineretului Park, Bucharest.
