Di Bacco and Lappage to wrestle-off for World team spot

June 25, 2019

CALGARY – Olivia Di Bacco and Danielle Lappage will compete in a wrestle-off for the 68 kg spot on the Senior World Championships team.

The wrestle-off will take place on June 26 in a closed session in Calgary.

Di Bacco, of Brock Wrestling Club, won the Senior Canadian Championships on March 23 to claim the top spot in the 68 kg weight class. The 26-year-old went on to capture a bronze medal at the 2019 Senior Pan American Championships.

Lappage and Di Bacco faced off at last year’s Women’s Team Trials for the 68 kg spot on the 2018 Senior World Championship team. Di Bacco came away with a 4-1 victory and a spot on the team.

Di Bacco went on to finish fifth at the World Championships, falling in the bronze medal match to Tamyra Mensah-Stock of USA.

Lappage made the most of her opportunity. The Calgary Dinos wrestler won the Non-Olympic Weight Trials at 65 kg later that month to ensure she was still able to compete at the World Championships.

At Worlds, the 28-year-old from Olds, Alta., took home a silver medal to claim her first Senior World Championship medal.

Lappage will have to win two out of three matches to claim the 68 kg spot on the team.

The Senior World Championships are from September 14 to 22 in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.
