Eight wrestlers punch tickets to Worlds at Non-Olympic Team trials; Greco-Roman winners top podium

THOROLD, ON — The 2025 Canadian U23 Wrestling Championships and Sr., Jr. Greco-Roman, & Non-Olympic Weight Class Trials concluded on June 28th from Canada Games Park in Thorold, Ontario. The day featured the Senior Non-Olympic Weight Class Trials for four weight classes for both the men and women, as well as Greco-Roman championships for junior and senior men.
Non-Olympic Weight Class Trials
Women’s Results
On the women’s side, some familiar names earned their spot on the world team. Surrey, British Columbia’s Karla Godinez-Gonzalez won the 55kg weight class, to add to her national championship at 57kg. Godinez-Gonzalez, from Burnaby Mountain WC, is a past world bronze medalist at 55kg, so she will look to capture another medal at this year’s championships.
At 59kg, it will be another familiar name with Montreal’s Laurence Beauregard winning the weight class. Beauregard, from Montreal WC, has won four Pan-American Championship gold medals at 59kg and will be aiming to add a world medal to her collection.
Joining them will be a pair of new senior world team members in Calgary’s Miki Rowbottom, Dinos WC, at 65kg; and St. Catharines, Ontario’s Vanessa Keefe, Brock WC, at 72kg.
Men’s Results
Only one member from the 2024 world team will return on the men’s side, Saskatoon’s Andrew Johnson. The Saskatoon WC member successfully defended the 92kg weight class and will get another opportunity on the international stage.
Joining Johnson will be St. Catharines’ Garette Saunders, Brock WC, at 61kg; Thunder Bay, Ontario’s Mike Zale, Lakehead WC, at 70kg; and Mississauga, Ontario’s Patrik Leder, Burnaby Mountain WC, at 79kg.
Greco-Roman Results
In Greco-Roman wrestling, London-Western WC walked away as the top club for both the juniors and seniors. The Most Outstanding Wrestlers also both went to London-Western WC members. Narin, Ontario’s Nikola Coles, who won the 72kg weight class, took home the junior honours. Meanwhile, Hamilton’s Lukas Geske, was named the senior winner after taking the 87kg weight class.
That does it for another national championship. Wrestling Canada Lutte would like to thank the Brock WC, Brock University, the Ontario Amateur Wrestling Association, the Province of Ontario, all volunteers, staff, coaches and most importantly the athletes for a great event.
