First Canadian Wrestler Touches the Mat at TO2015

July 16, 2015

(Toronto, ON) – On the first day of 2015 Pan Am Games wrestling action, a hometown favourite, Mississauga’s Dylan Williams (Greco-Roman 59KG) was the only Canadian wrestler for the day.

In his opening bout, about an hour into the afternoon session, Williams met Ali Soto of Mexico. Soto, who was third in Greco-Roman 59 kg at the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games, won the bout 9-0. With Soto winning his next bout, Williams moved into the bronze medal final.

In the bronze final, Williams wrestled Cristóbal Torres of Chile. In an even first three minutes, the buzzer announced the half time with no points being awarded. In the second three minutes, the Chilean was awarded the first point in the first minute and with 30 seconds to go won another two points. In media scrums following the match, Williams spoke of the experience:

“I am so honestly happy to be wrestling with these guys who have so much more experience than I do. Domestically, I’m OK, but really, I just need to be getting more experience internationally,” said Williams. “Internationally I’m mostly against guys who do this style, this is really only my second, third tournament in Greco-Roman wrestling and a lot of these guys have been doing it a lot longer.”

Coming up on July 16, 2016 from Mississauga, the following disciplines, categories and Canadian wrestlers will be going for medals:

Greco-Roman 98KG: Jeremy Latour, (Guelph, ON)
Greco-Roman 130KG: Charles Thoms, (Fredericton, NB)
