Men’s Freestyle Cadet & Juvenile Champions Crowned

(Fredericton, NB) – After the first day of full competition at the 2015 ASICS Cadet / Juvenile Canadian Wrestling Championships at University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, Men’s Freestyle Cadet & Juvenile champions were crowned and awards presented to outstanding cadet and juvenile athletes, clubs and teams for 2015.

“Wrestling Canada Lutte thanks the 2015 ASICS Canadian Championships Organizing Committee, University of New Brunswick and the Black Bears Wrestling Club for being exceptional hosts so far,” says Tamara Medwidsky, Executive Director Wrestling Canada Lutte.

Wrestling will continue on Saturday with Men’s Freestyle Cadet Team Trials, which is the selection event for the Cadet National Teams, as well as Women’s Freestyle Cadet and Juvenile events.

“There were a number of exciting matches today, showcasing some up and coming athletes,” says Talent Identification Coach Tonya Verbeek. “I am very excited for the opportunity to work with this young and talented group.”

As part of the awards presentations, for the first time ever, Wrestling Canada Lutte presented the cadet awards for 2015. Based on the previous season’s international results, the Cadet Male Athlete of the Year was presented to Alex Moore of Montreal. Moore won a silver medal at the 2014 Cadet Pan American Championships as well as 6th place finish at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games.

Based on ballots submitted during the competition, the Outstanding Cadet Men’s Award was presented to: Connor McNeice of the Cochrane Cowboys Wrestling Club & Outstanding Juvenile Men’s Award was presented to Torrey Toribio from John Olive Secondary School.

Other awards presented included:

  • Club Team Award Cadet Men’s Freestyle: Guru Gobind Singh Wrestling Club (BC)
  • Club Team Award Juvenile Men’s Freestyle: Matmen Wrestling Club (Ontario)
  • Provincial Team Award Cadet Men’s Freestyle: Team Ontario
  • Provincial Team Award Juvenile Men’s Freestyle: Team Ontario

The 2015 ASICS Cadet / Juvenile Canadian Wrestling Championships are taking place at the University of New Brunswick at the Aitken University Centre, as sanctioned by Wrestling Canada Lutte. Cadet and Juvenile competition includes Men’s and Women’s Freestyle as well as Men’s and Women’s Greco-roman wrestling. Weigh-ins started on Thursday, April 9th for Men’s Freestyle competitors with Women’s Freestyle preliminaries and finals and Greco-Roman weigh-ins starting on April 10th. Saturday April 11th will bring Women’s Freestyle Cadet & Juvenile preliminaries and gold medal matches.
