Mian and Morais place 7th at Senior World Championships
(Paris, France) – Day 4 of the Senior World Championships saw Team Canada fall short of the medal rounds, with two 7th place finishes from Jasmine Mian and Linda Morais. The women’s team finished 6th overall, which will mean an invite to the World Cup, taking place in Takasaki, Japan in March 2018.
At 48 kg, Rio Olympian Jasmine Mian started with a 13-6 win over Leksina of Russia, followed by a 12-2 win over Selishka of Bulgaria. In the quarter-finals, Mian lost by fall to Vuc of Romania, the eventual silver medallist. In the repechage, she lost 2-4 to Chyryk of Belarus and did not advance to the bronze medal match, finishing in 7th.
At 60 kg, Linda Morais came out strong defeating hometown favourite Basset 10-0, followed by a 15-4 win over Kwon of South Korea. She then lost 0-10 to Olympic champion and eventual winner, Kawai of Japan. In the repechage, Morais lost 8-11 by fall against Baatarjav of Mongolia to place in 7th.
At 53 kg and 69 kg, Jessica MacDonald and Olivia Di Bacco lost their opening matches 0-10 to Orshush of Russia and 0-11 to Han of China, respectively, before being eliminated from competition.
Wrestling continues on Friday at 10 am local time, with men’s freestyle competition, with Canada being represented by Aso Palani (57 kg), Steven Takahashi (61 kg), Jordan Steen (86 kg) and Korey Jarvis (125 kg). All wrestling takes place at the Accor Hotels Arena in Paris.
