Montreal set to host Canadian Wrestling Championships (Senior, Junior, Cadet) this week

May 26, 2026

OTTAWA — The Canadian Wrestling Championships (Senior, Junior, Cadet) head to Montreal, May 28-30, at Centre Pierre Charbonneau. This premier wrestling event features three age groups of competitors all vying for the title of national champion and a spot on one of Canada’s national teams.

“The Canadian Wrestling Championships (Senior, Junior, Cadet) are always one of the most exciting events on our national calendar, as we crown Canadian champions and select athletes who will proudly represent Canada on the international stage,” said Tamara Medwidsky, Wrestling Canada Lutte (WCL) CEO. “This year’s championships carry even greater significance as we return to Montreal and Centre Pierre Charbonneau, the very venue where Olympic wrestling took place during the 1976 Montreal Games. As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of those Games, we are honoured to recognize and celebrate members of Canada’s 1976 Olympic wrestling team during Saturday evening’s festivities. It will be a special weekend that connects generations of Canadian wrestling excellence while inspiring the next generation of national team athletes.”

“We are extremely pleased to welcome the Canadian Wrestling Championships to Montreal. This national event will provide an exceptional showcase to promote the talent of our Quebec wrestlers, said Martine Dugrenier, Event Chair. “The Championships will also be a magical nod to history with the competition will take place in the same building that hosted Olympic wrestling 50 years ago.”

The event will feature many recognizable names to Canadian wrestling fans including many athletes who have represented Canada on the international stage. Headlining the senior division will be 2024 Olympian and former U23 World Champion, Surrey, British Columbia’s Ana Godinez. Godinez will compete at 62kg as she looks to take the first step in returning to the international podium. The senior men’s side also has a past World Champion competing with Anmore, British Columbia’s Peiman Biabani. Biabani captured the title as a junior and is now looking to add to his success as a senior. He most recently won a silver medal at the 2026 Pan-American (Pan-Am) Championships. He will compete at 65kg.

Leading the local contingent will be Montreal’s Laurence Beauregard. Beauregard had a terrific 2025 capturing a bronze medal at the World Championships. She also added her fourth Pan-Am Championships gold medal. Already this year she has found the podium, earning a silver at the 2026 Pan-Am Championships.

Looking at the younger age groups, the junior and cadet divisions will be interesting to watch especially with a cohort of siblings competing. On the women’s side, former U17 World Champion Kaura Coles, from Ailsa Craig, Ontario, will hit the mats at 53kg. She will be looking to transition her success as a cadet to the junior ranks. She will be pulling double duty during the event, as she will also compete in the 53kg senior division.  Meanwhile her brother, Jerin, will be in action, also pulling a double at 71kg as a cadet and 74kg as junior. Jerin Coles won a gold medal earlier this year at the U17 Pan-Am Championships and has his sights set on a World Championship, like his sister. The junior 74kg division could get even more interesting as Jerin’s brother Nicola is also entered, meaning there could be a sibling showdown, depending on the bracket. The family has one more entrant at the event as Timi Coles will compete in the women’s 46kg weight class.

In addition to the event itself, special ceremonies will take place on Saturday (May 30th). The first ceremony will be to induct the newest member into the WCL Hall of Fame – Martine Dugrenier. Following the Hall of Fame Ceremony members from the 1976 Olympic team will be honoured.

With so many great athletes in action, and special tributes to some of the pioneers of Canadian wrestling, the event is sure to be a can’t miss. Spectators are invited to attend any of the sessions, wrestling begins at 10 a.m. on all three competition days, with finals scheduled for 5 p.m. Admission is free. The event will also be streamed on FloWrestling. For complete tournament information, visit the tournament site.
