Non-Olympic weight spots selected for Worlds team
CALGARY – The final seven spots on the Canadian Senior World Championships team have been selected in Calgary at the Non-Olympic Weight Trials.
Seven athletes claimed their spots in non-Olympic weight classes to secure their selection on the team competing in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan in September.
In women’s 55 kg, Jade Parsons of Brock Wrestling Club defeated Samantha Stewart in the final 9-2. Parsons was a member of the 2018 World Championship team and finished fourteenth at 55 kg.
At 59 kg, Montreal Wrestling Club’s Linda Morais finished first in her round robin. Morais defeated 2018 U23 World Champion Alex Town by technical superiority 13-2.
Jessica Brouillette of Brock won the 65 kg round robin to secure her selection to the Worlds team. Her victory in her final match against Breanne Graham secured her selection.
At 72 kg, Dejah Slater will look to build on the gold medal she won at the Senior Pan American Championships in April.
On the men’s side, Montreal’s Scott Schiller finished atop a 61 kg three-way round robin tie. His victory by fall in his final match against Cean Bod-Oy.
At 70 kg, Michael Asselstine of Edmonton Wrestling Club scored in the final seconds on Vince De Marinis to secure his spot on the World Championship team.
Jasmit Phulka won a dramatic final over Shawn Daye-Finley to reclaim his spot at 79 kg on team.

Wrestling will continue tomorrow in Calgary with the Canada Cup taking place at the Jack Simpson gymnasium.
