Senior Canadian Championships & World Team Trials continue in Calgary
Canada’s top wrestlers meet up at the University of Calgary next week to battle for senior World Team titles
(Ottawa, ON – April 24, 2014) The final stage of Canadian Championships for women’s Olympic weight classes and senior World Team Trials for men’s freestyle non-Olympic weight classes will be taking place at the University of Calgary on May 3rd, 2014.
Ranking in the top 8 as a country at the 2013 Senior World Championships, our senior women’s team qualified to participate in the 2014 Women’s World Cup, which was in direct conflict with our Senior Canadian Championships, held in Edmonton earlier this year. To address this conflict, a second stage to the Championships was scheduled to ensure the fairest possible selection and to allow all our female athletes the opportunity to wrestle the new Olympic weight classes for the first time at a Canadian Championship.
The change in senior international weight classes at the end of 2013 required the Association to revisit its selection procedures due to the addition of non-Olympic weight classes. A secondary selection event, the World Team Selection Trials, was added and will have our best athletes vying for a spot on the Senior Men’s Freestyle World Team in non-Olympic weight classes. World Team spots in men’s freestyle Olympic weight classes were selected at the first stage of the Canadian Championships held in March 2014. The women’s non-Olympic weight class team spots will be selected at a trials held in conjunction with the 2014 Canada Cup, being held in Guelph on July 4th, 2014.
