Senior team complete as winners emerge at Non-Olympic World Team Trials
THOROLD – The 2026 Canadian Senior Wrestling team is now finalized after winners were crowned at the non-Olympic Weight Class Trials on June 27 at Canada Games Park in Thorold, Ontario. The event, hosted in connection with the Canadian U23 Championships, which were contested on June 26, saw eight weight classes up for grabs (four men’s and four women’s).
Women’s results
55kg – Surrey, British Columbia’s Karla Godinez once again captured the 55kg weight class. The Burnaby Mountain WC member was in four-person round robin and went 3-0 and did not surrender a point. Godinez is a past world bronze medalist at 55kg and will get another chance at a world medal.
59kg – Also returning to the world team in the 59kg weight class is Montreal’s Laurence Beauregard. Beauregard, from Montreal WC, also went 3-0 in a four-person round robin, and will get a chance to return to the World Championships, where she won a bronze medal last year.
65kg – Sherwood Park, Alberta’s Maria Sawiak captured the 65kg weight class. The Edmonton WC member went 3-0 in her four-person round robin.
72kg – The women’s 72kg went to Swift Current, Saskatchewan’s Aleah Nickel, from Edmonton WC. Nickel was in a round robin with five other competitors and went undefeated to claim the spot.

Men’s results
61kg – The men’s 61kg weight class was won by St. Catharines, Ontario’s Garette Saunders. Saunders, from Brock WC, was in a three-person round robin and defeated both of his opponents to earn his spot.
70kg – North York, Ontario’s Lachlan McNeil won the 70kg weight class. The Team Impact member already captured the 74kg weight class at the Canadian Wrestling Championships, but now will have his choice as to which weight he competes at, at the World Championships.
79kg – The men’s 79kg weight class was won by Komoka, Ontario resident Connor Church. Church, from London-Western WC, picked up three wins as he came out on top of the weight class’s bracket.
92kg – Bathurst, New Brunswick’s Koen Poirier topped the 92kg weight class. The Black Bears WC member had a good weekend, winning the 92kg and the U23 86kg weight class the day prior.

That does it for another national championship. Wrestling Canada Lutte would like to thank the Brock WC, Brock University, the Ontario Amateur Wrestling Association, the Province of Ontario, all volunteers, staff, coaches and most importantly the athletes for a great event.
