Taylor finishes fifth at Junior World Championships

TRNAVA, Slovakia – Hannah Taylor ran out of time in her Junior World Championships bronze medal bout against India’s Mansi Mansi. Taylor was taken down early and couldn’t mount a comeback leading to a 1-2 loss and fifth place finish.

Talyor, of Cornwall, P.E.I., wrestled in the 57 kg weight class and had the top result of the Canadian women at the championship event, which is taking place at the City Sports Hall in Trnava, Slovakia.

The last Canadian to medal at a Junior World Championships was Montreal’s Jade Dufour who captured bronze at the 2016 event in Macon, France.

Taylor, who trains with Brock Wrestling Club, won her first match of the tournament against Kazakhstan’s Zhanerke Assanova. She lost her quarterfinal bout to the eventual gold medallist Andoriahanako Sawa of Japan.

The 20-year-old was then pulled into the repechage where she defeated German Serena Boelke by technical superiority.

Toronto’s Jayd Davis was also pulled into a repechage at 53 kg but came up short against Poland’s Alicja Czyzowicz. Davis, who wrestles with Team Impact, won her first match of the day against Carmen Di Dio of Italy, before falling to Japan’s Umi Imai.

The other two Canada women competing at the Junior Worlds lost in their opening rounds on Thursday. Sara Brinkac, of Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club fell to Xiuyun Chen of China at 59 kg. Dejah Slater, who’s fifth place finish was top in Canada at the 2017 Junior World Championships, was defeated by Sonika Hooda of India at 68 kg.

On the men’s side, Brock Wrestling Club’s Richard Deschatelets was pulled into the repechage after losing his opening bout to Russia’s Magomedkhan Magomedov. He will wrestle on Saturday for a chance to qualify for the 97 kg bronze medal match.

Connor McNeice and Gunnar Sales both lost in their first-round bouts. McNeice, of the Cochrane Cowboys Wrestling Club fell to India’s Rohit Rohit at 65 kg. Guelph Wrestling Club’s Sales was defeated by Aliaksandr Kuryshta of Belarus at 70 kg.

Hunter Lee and Aly Barghout will wrestle in the qualifying rounds on Satuday.
