Team Canada on the hunt for Tokyo 2020 quota spots at World Championships

NUR-SULTAN, Kazakhstan – Wrestling Canada Lutte has finalized its roster of wrestlers for the Senior World Championships who will be looking to qualify their weight-class for a quota spot at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The event will take place September 14 to 22 at the Barys Arena Ice Palace, home arena of the Barys Astana of the Kontinental Hockey League.

The women’s team will be led by Rio 2016 Olympic Champion Erica Wiebe, who will be wrestling at 76 kg. The 30-year-old from Stittsville, Ont., took home bronze from the World Championships in 2018.

Other women’s team veterans include Diana Weicker who will be wrestling at 53 kg, and Danielle Lappage at 68 kg. Weicker, 30, had a breakout year in 2018 that included bronze at the World Championships and gold at the Commonwealth Games. Lappage, 28, picked up silver medals at both the World Championships and Commonwealth Games in 2018.

Ana Godinez will be making her senior team debut. The 19-year-old captured bronze at the Junior World Championships on August 16.

Korey Jarvis of Elliott Lake, Ont., leads an otherwise young team of men into the championships. The 32-year-old will look to build on the bronze medal he picked up at the 2019 Pan American Games.

Tokyo 2020 Qualification

A top six finish at the World Championships will qualify a quota spot for Canada in that weight-class. Any athlete who finishes in the top six will be given a bye to the finals at the Canadian Wrestling Trials in December. Complete Tokyo 2020 internal nominating procedures can be found here.

A record-setting 2018

Team Canada will look to build on their strong showing at the 2018 World Championships. The four medals collected were the most a Canadian team had ever earned at the event. The team earned three medals in one night, including a gold from Justina Di Stasio, silver from Lappage, and bronze from Wiebe, followed by another bronze from Weicker the following night.

Three referees selected

Canada is one of only five nations to have three referees selected to officiate the World Championships. Gary Bird, Demetra Koutsopodiotis-Gauthier, and Ed Zinger will represent Canada as officials. This tournament is also part of the Olympic qualification process for referees.
