Barghout captures silver at Junior World Championships
September 23, 2018
TRNAVA, Slovakia – Aly Barghout picked up Canada’s lone medal in the last match of the Junior World Championships.
Barghout, of Longueuil, Que., earned a spot in the 125 kg gold medal match after defeating Rahid Hamidli of Azerbaijan 3-2 in the semifinals.
In the gold medal match, Barghout was aggressive but couldn’t outdo his Russian opponent Soslan Khinchagov.
“I tried to treat it like any other match,” said Barghout. “My focus was on my warmup and to make sure that I listened to my corner.”
“I tried to learn from my mistakes after each match and take it one match at a time.”
The medal was the 20-year-old’s second international silver of the year. Barghout finished second at the 2018 Junior Pan Am Championships in Fortaleza, Brazil.
The Montreal YMHA wrestler improved from his ninth-place finish at last year’s Junior World Championships.
Barghout was the fourth men’s freestyle junior medallist in the past six years. He joins Nishan Randhawa who captured bronze in 2015, Amar Dhesi who won gold in 2014, and Sunny Dhinsa who took home bronze in 2013.
Hunter Lee, of Saskatoon Wrestling Club, was the only other Canadian competitor wrestling on Saturday.
Lee, of Flin Flon, Man., got as far as the quarterfinal before being pinned in the quarterfinal by Uzbekistan’s Makhsud Veysalov. Lee finished thirteenth in the 92 kg weight-class.
The top Canadian finisher on the women’s side was Hannah Taylor who finished fifth at 57 kg on Friday.
