October 19, 2018

BUDAPEST, Hungary – The Canadian team is rested and ready to compete on the eve of the Senior World Championships.

On Saturday, the competition will begin with men’s freestyle. Amar Dhesi and Scott Schiller will be the first Canadians on the mats. Dhesi, of Surrey, B.C., will compete at 125 kg, and Schiller, of Windsor, Ont., will be wrestling at 61 kg.

“The team is where they need to be right now,” said Tonya Verbeek, Wrestling Canada Lutte’s International Coach.

“The men are eager to get into the competition, and the women are focused on their preparation. The team has done the right things so far.”

Dhesi will wrestle Zhiwei Deng of China in the 1/8 final, and Schiller will face off against Azerbaijan’s Parviz Ibrahimov in the qualifiers.

Jevon Balfour was slated to represent Canada at 74 kg, but had to withdraw due to injury.

Preliminary rounds are set to run from 4:30 am to 9:30 am ET, and semifinals go from 10:45 am to 11:45 am. The event will be webcasted by United World Wrestling.
