Canadian Wrestling Team Ready to Compete At 2015 Vegas Worlds

Ottawa, ON – With close to 100 countries participating at the 2015 Wrestling World Championships, the Canadian Team is ready to meet the world and compete at the first qualifying event for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

“Coming off a strong 2015 Pan Am Games showing with 14 of the 18 World Championship team entries having competed in Toronto, Team Canada is ready to perform in Vegas,” says Tamara Medwidsky, Executive Director, Wrestling Canada Lutte. With the 2015 Worlds being the last World Championships prior to the 2016 Olympics, it provides the best opportunity to gauge the best in the world.”

On the road to Rio, at the recent Pan Am Games and heading into these World Championships, Canadian wrestlers achieved success with three gold medals, three silver medals and two bronze medals.

The 2015 World Championships team is led by 2015 Pan Am Games Champion, 2014 Commonwealth Games Champion, 2010 Youth Olympic Games Champion, 2014 World University Games World Champion, 2012 Senior World Championship silver medalist and two-time World Junior Champion, Dorothy Yeats in the 69kg division. Highlighting the men’s team is two-time Olympian Haislan Garcia. Garcia competed in his second consecutive Olympic Games at London 2012, finished seventh in the men’s freestyle 66 kg division and was a recent bronze medalist at TO2015.

Additional team members include 2015 Pan Am Games Champions Genevieve Morrison (48 KG) and Braxton Stone-Papadopoulos (63 KG), just coming off a 2015 Junior World bronze medal performance a few weeks ago, 2015 Pan Am Games silver medalist Korey Jarvis (125 KG) and Justina Di Stasio (75 KG) and 2015 Pan Am Games bronze medalist Tamerlan Tagziev (86 KG).

The World Wrestling Championships for 2015 are organized by United World Wrestling (formally the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles – FILA) and hosted by USA Wrestling, United States Olympic Committee and Las Vegas Events. The Championships will feature three wrestling disciplines: Men’s Greco-Roman, Women’s Freestyle and Men’s Freestyle.
