Canada’s top wrestlers converge to the University of Alberta to battle for Canadian Championships titles

(Ottawa, ON – March 17, 2014) The 2014 ASICS Junior and Senior Canadian Wrestling Championships will be held in Edmonton, Alberta, this coming weekend, and present a chance for all Canadian wrestlers to battle for the title of Canadian Champion.

This is the first Canadian Championship being held since wrestling was reinstated in the Olympic programme in September 2013. This year’s event will see the new FILA rules in play as well as the new Olympic weight classes in the senior age category.

This Championship is the primary selection event for the Junior and Senior National Teams which will represent Canada at several international events leading up to the 2014 Junior World and Senior World Championships, as well as the 2014 Commonwealth Games. “It is the highest level event in our domestic competition system and brings with it the pressure of performance and the rewards for those that make it through to the top”, commented Don Ryan, President of Wrestling Canada.

Tamara Medwidsky, Executive Director at Wrestling Canada, stated that “we are excited to witness some of the best wrestling Canada has to offer. The Championships are also a great opportunity for everyone in the wrestling community to come together and share their passion and pride in the sport”.

The list of confirmed participants, for all age and weight categories, will be published after weigh-in sessions.

The 2014 ASICS Junior and Senior Canadian Wrestling Championships are organized by the Bears Wrestling Club, in collaboration with the Friends of the World Cup of Wrestling Society and Alberta Amateur Wrestling Association, as sanctioned by Wrestling Canada. The event starts on Friday, March 21st with the Junior freestyle tournament, followed by the Senior freestyle tournament on Saturday March 22nd . Junior and Senior Greco-Roman will be wrestled on Sunday, March 23rd. Saturday will also see the induction of Erica Sharp into the Wrestling Canada Hall of Fame.
