JUNIOR/SENIOR CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
(March 22-24, 2019)
INFORMATION: 2019 Senior Canadian Championships
With the Canadian Championships fast approaching, we encourage all athletes and coaches to review the 2019-2020 Wrestle-Off procedures. Note that a request for a wrestle-off due to injury or event conflict must occur prior to the event. Additionally, where a wrestle off for either injury or illness is request, it is required to submit an Inability to Participate Medical Form to the High Performance Director.
Please note that there will be a coaches meeting for all Senior and Junior Coaches following the finals on Saturday night. An announcement will be made on site as to start time and location following the last match of the day. All coaches are required to attend. The Canadian Olympic Committee will be in attendance to co-present the INP for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
SENIOR PAN AMS
There has been a date change to the Senior Pan Ams: April 18-21 Buenos Aires, Argentina.
TOP RANKED ATHLETES WILL BE EXPECTED TO ACCEPT OR DECLINE THEIR NOMINATIONS WITHIN 24 HOURS OF THE END OF CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS (where there are wrestle offs, the HPD will decide on who will attend which event pending time frame). Coaches and athletes, please discuss your options and outcomes should you be selected PRIOR to coming to the Championships so that an informed and quick decision can be made. There is a tight turnaround especially with Senior Pan Am Championships and we will need to action on the flights and entries within 24 hours of selection.
SELECTED NATIONAL TEAM EVENT ATHLETES
Please review the selection criteria for international teams for 2019.
JUNIOR AND CADET PROGRAMMING
WCL is pleased to announce their programming for both Cadet and Juniors for the 2019-2020 season. Please see the links below for the 2019-2020 Junior and Cadet programs. Please direct inquiries to NextGen Coach Kimin Kim at [email protected]
REMINDERS FROM JANUARY HP UPDATES
A UWW licence is required for an athlete to participate in a UWW sanctioned event (e.g. Canada Cup, Pan American Championships, Ranking Series Events, International Tours, etc.).
To apply for a licence, the following is required:
- completed UWW medical form: https://unitedworldwrestling.org/sites/default/files/2018-12/181129_uww_-_declaration_du_lutteur_carte_licence_uww_final_2019.doc_3.pdf
- current valid passport scan
- Senior/Junior: $140 CDN fee; Cadet $75 (interac e-transfer, Credit Card payment, cheque)
We can NO longer purchase licences on site, and NO longer expedite the licences. The process can take up to 2-4 weeks. Please attend to this as soon as possible. Licence Fees will be at the athlete’s expense. WCL will issue an invoice upon completion of the process.
Effective January 1, 2019, United World Wrestling (UWW), our international federation, will be implementing mandatory UWW Coach Licences for all coaches attending United World Wrestling sanctioned competitions. These are NOT required for WCL domestic NON UWW events. These licences are similar to those your athletes have been required to purchase and MUST be purchased through the WCL head office 2-4 weeks ahead of the event.
Please note that these licences do not supersede any WCL coaching requirements for international coaching assignment. Coaches are required to have a minimum Competition Development Certified coaching accreditation to be considered for an international tournament and for their UWW coaching licence.
Please see attached documentation as well as the links below for more information.
SCREENING POLICY – SENIOR/JUNIOR CANADIAN WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

PAN AM GAMES
Please note that the Canadian Olympic Committee has allocated 8 funded athlete spots to Wrestling for the Pan Am Games (pending qualification). The reduction is due to the fact that this is not an Olympic qualification event for wrestling and not a home Games. Beyond the 8 funded spots, self funding is permitted – however, the current estimated cost is in the region of $6,000. An update to the INP for Lima 2019 will be announced before Senior Canadian Championships.
