Randhawa Wins Second Canadian Title on Day 2 of the Junior / Senior Championships
(Fredericton, NB) – The second day of competition saw Senior Canadian Champions crowned at the 2016 Asics Junior / Senior Canadian Championships at the University of New Brunswick. The crowd saw Nishan Randhawa of the Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club win his second title of the Championships in the Senior 97 kg division after winning the Junior title in the same weight class the previous day. Hometown favourite Samantha Stewart fought her way to claim the Canadian Champion title at 53 kg as well as Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.

In addition to medal presentations for all senior weight classes, Wrestling Canada Lutte also presented the senior awards for 2015. Based on the previous season’s international results, the Senior Female Athlete of the Year was presented to Genevieve Morrison of the Dinos Wrestling Club. Morrison had an outstanding season, winning gold at the TO2015 Pan Am Games, bronze at the 2015 Senior World Championships, qualifying the 48 kg weight class for the Rio Olympic Games. For the men, Haislan Garcia from the Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club was presented with the Senior Male Athlete of the Year Award following a solid 2015, winning a bronze medal at the TO2015 Pan Am Games and a 12th place finish at the 2015 Senior World Championships.
Based on ballots submitted during the competition, the Outstanding Senior Women’s and Men’s Awards were presented to: Samantha Stewart of the Black Bears Wrestling Club and Montreal YMHA’s Jordie Steen.

• Club Team Award Senior Men’s Freestyle: Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club
• Provincial Team Award Senior Women: Team Ontario
• Provincial Team Award Senior Men’s Freestyle: Team Ontario
As per tradition, Wrestling Canada Lutte featured the Hall of Fame inductions as part of the Saturday presentations. Inducted were Andrew Borodow into the Hall of Fame athlete category and Jim Mitchell as a builder.
