Wrestling Canada Lutte is pleased to announce that 2014 Canadian Juvenile Women’s Champion at 60 kg, Tiffany Hibbert of Simon Fraser University has been selected as the recipient of the Bob McLeod Scholarship for the 2014/2015 academic year.

The native of Rexton, New Brunswick who is now in her first year at Simon Fraser University and training with the SFU Wrestling Club, strives for excellence both in the classroom and on the mats. She achieved an 84% average in her final year of high school and under her coaches, Tiffany has developed into a competitive athlete at her age-group.

We caught up with Tiffany recently and had her answer the following questions:

When did you start wrestling, where and who have been your coaches to this point?

I started wrestling when I was in grade 6 at Eleanor Graham Middle School. My coach at the time was Kevin Scully, who told me from the day I started, that he saw a bright future in wrestling ahead of me. At Bonar Law Memorial High School, I was coached by Pat Scully for the first 3 years and then by Krista Betts in grade 12, leading to my national championship title last year.

Now wrestling at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, I’m coached by Mike Jones, with assistance from Justina Di Stasio, a current national team member.

As this CIS season moves towards Conference and National Championships what are your goals and your team’s goals?

SFU is not currently a member of the CIS program, but moving towards Canadian Championships, I have goals to land on the podium, giving everything I have.

Is there a specific career area you are looking at now or will that be something you determine further into your studies?

Ever since I’ve been a kid, I have looked towards becoming a teacher, specifically a Physical Education teacher because I love sports so much.

What aspirations do you have for international success representing Canada?

I plan to wrestle for Canada one day and hope to be the top 8 in the world. I aspire to represent Canada to the best of my abilities. One day!

The Bob McLeod Scholarship is awarded annually to an age group national champion who has combined their wrestling pursuits with a solid academic performance entering or at the post-secondary level. It is named after the long-serving member of the national association’s Executive Committee who passed away in 1985 and is supported by his family and their generous donations.
