Canadian women finish second at Senior Pan Am Championships

BUENOS AIRES – Hannah Taylor of Cornwall, P.E.I., captured the lone silver medal, while four other Canadians, three women and one man, took home bronze at the Senior Pan American Championships in Buenos Aires.

The Canadian women finished second behind USA with two gold, three silver, and three bronze medals.

Taylor, who trains with the Brock Wrestling Club, defeated Venezuela’s Betzabeth Sarco Colmenarez and Nes Rodriguez Tirado of Peru before falling to Ecuador’s Lissette Alexandra Antes Castillo in the 57 kg gold medal match.

The bronze medals were captured by Diana Weicker, Olivia Di Bacco, Erica Wiebe and Jasmit Phulka.

Weicker, Taylor’s teammate at Brock, defeated Colombia’s Carolina Castillo Hidalgo 6-2 in the 53 kg bronze medal bout. She lost to American Sarah Hildebrandt in the semifinals. Hildebrandt went on to win gold at 53 kg.

Di Bacco, another Brock wrestler won her 68 kg bronze medal match against Peru’s Yanet Sovero Nino by injury forfeit.

Wiebe fell to American rival Adeline Gray in the 76 kg quarterfinal, but won her repechage match against Andrea Olaya Gutierrez of Colombia to secure a spot in the bronze medal bout. There, she defeated Cuba’s Mabelkis Capote Perez 6-0.

Phulka got the men started with a bronze medal performance at 79 kg. He fell in the final match of his round robin to Santiago Martinez Restrepo of Colombia to claim bronze.
