May 12, 2025

MONTERREY, MEXICO – The 2025 Pan-American (Pan-Am) Championships wrapped up on May 11 from Monterrey, Mexico. Seven men’s freestyle weight classes were up for grabs with Canada featuring a competitor in each. At the end of the day, Canada came away with a pair of silver and four bronze medals. Adding those to the two bronze medals won on Saturday, Canada was able to finish second overall in the team competition.

The two silver medals were won by Saskatoon’s Andrew Johnson, and Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario’s Richard DesChatelets. For Johnson, from Saskatoon Wrestling Club, he was in a round robin at 92kg with four other competitors. He dropped his first match to American Trent Hidlay, who would go on to be perfect in the round robin and win the gold. Johnson won his second match 10-2 over Edwin Morales of Puerto Rico. Then, he defeated Miguel Lavielle of Mexico 10-0. He picked up a forfeit win in his final match against Panama’s Eduardo Vega, meaning he finished the round robin at 3-1 to claim the silver.

“This feels great!” said Johnson after his medal win. “This is my first senior Pan-Am medal, and I am glad to be taking home some hardware. I’ve got the Nationals up next at the end of the month in Edmonton and I am hoping to put on another good show!”

The other silver for Canada came at 125kg where DesChatelets, Brock Wrestling Club, was in a traditional bracket. He opened with an 11-0 win over Mexico’s Rizieri Chavez in the quarterfinal. He then defeated Gino Avila of Honduras in the semifinal to earn a spot in the gold medal match. However, he would be stopped by American Wyatt Hendrickson, who defeated DesChatelets by fall for the gold.

The four bronze medals went to Anmore, British Columbia’s Peiman Biabani at 65kg; Burnaby, British Columbia’s Jacob Alexander Torres at 70kg; Abbotsford, British Columbia’s Jasmit Phulka at 79kg; and Abbotsford’s Nishan Randhawa at 97kg.

Also in action during the day was Longueil, Quebec’s Chris Merlo who finished 9th at 57kg.

Canada finishes the 2025 Pan-Am Championships with 14 total medals: three gold, five silver and six bronze.
